Max Walker Sessions
Max Walker is an up and coming singer/songwriter in the indie-pop genre. Originally from the midwest, he is currently living his passion in Nashville, TN, having had the opportunity to play at the Hard Rock Cafe and B.B. King’s Blues Club.
After a recently successful Kickstarter campaign, Max is working on the release of his second EP. The goal of this project was to promote several songs from the upcoming EP.
Max has a background in live performances playing guitar and using a looping station. This gives him a sense of a larger production while maintaining an acoustic sound. I wanted to use this tone as a guide for the video series.
The set was made from stacked wooden pallets as a background. This added an earthy and midwestern feel to the final piece. A heavy use of a backlight was chosen to give the feel of a spotlight, as if the subject were on stage. This light shone through the pallets in order to break it up, allowing for sporadic lens flares.
Multiple microphones were used to capture a clean audio recording as well as some ambiance in the room. These were mixed together to give a raw sound to the music.
In addition to the backlight, the light was tinted slightly orange to add warmth to the scene. Harsh lighting from the back paired with soft lighting as the key served to contrast the lighting, making the final image more pleasing to the eye. While editing, the warmth was accentuated through the color grading, contributing to a homey feeling.
